After her career as a civil engineer, Helen Atkinson began freelance writing in 1959, reporting and publishing on the oil industry in Alaska. Virtually all of this collection consists of Atkinson's writing files: The drafts, photographs, and clippings of the articles she wrote for various publications as well as the charts, reports, articles, and maps she consulted for background information. The materials are related primarily to construction, transportation, land use, energy resources, and petroleum exploration and production in arctic and sub-arctic Alaska with a substantial part of her files pertaining to the Trans-Alaska pipeline and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.

Helen Atkinson graduated from Fairbanks High School. She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Alaska with a degree in Civil Engineering. Atkinson worked for the Fairbanks Exploration Company after graduation, completing maps, drill logs, and engineering reports.
